The LOWA Military Boot Guide To Waterproofing Suede Uppers

LOWA offers a range of military boots with suede uppers, all of which feature Cordura® fabric uppers to increase resistance to wear and tear over their lifetime. However, because suede is a delicate fabric, extra care is needed in order to ensure that suede uppers remain effective and healthy when exposed to the elements. For these reasons, it is important to know how to properly waterproof suede boots.

How to Waterproof Suede Boots

1. Prepare and Clean the Boots

The first step is to ensure that your suede boots are cleaned and prepared for the proofing process. Remove the laces and open up the tongue. Using a specialised suede cleaning brush or other light brush, remove all loose dirt and dust from the boots. Next, wipe the boots clean with a cloth soaked in warm water, rinsing lightly with lukewarm water for particularly heavy soiling. Try not tosoak the boots.

2. Cover with Reproofing Spray

Once cleaned and left to dry, cover the boots one at a time with a coat of suede reproofing spray or cream. Distribute the spray evenly from around 5 centimetres away from the boot, or apply the cream evenly, ensuring that you don’t miss a spot. Once the first boot is complete, do the same for the second. Be careful not to spray too much in one place, as this can cause permanent discolouration.

3. Let the Boots Dry Naturally

After covering both boots with the reproofing spray or cream, place them on a towel and leave them to dry naturally for approximately 24 hours (if possible). Do not try to speed up the process with a hairdryer or another towel, as this will likely cause damage to the material and finish of the boots. Also, try to leave the boots to dry in an open room, to allow the smell of the spray to dissipate.

4. Test and Finish the Boots

Touch an area near the sole to check if the boots are completely dry. Finally, use a suede footwear brush to restore the original finish of the boots. This will help the small hairs of the material to stay healthy and durable, leaving you with the best possible finish.
